Your gateway bands

ExplicitExpert got me to thinking about all of the gateway metal bands that really got me into metal and paved the way to what I listen to today. The first few bands that I was actually a fan of were a bit diverse, but included AC/DC, KISS, Deep Purple, Nirvana, No Doubt, Lenny Kravitz and Black Sabbath lol But some of the first heavier metal bands I got into were Disturbed, Slipknot, All That Remains, some Marilyn Manson, Metallica, Korn, and Trivium. Definitely a progression, so what's your bands?

When I was younger I started off with Pantera, Metallica, Slayer, KoRn, KISS, and those are the earliest I remember then I went through my dumb ass phase and tried to be like every one eals in my school and listen to Backstreet Boys..... a decision to this day I still regret but could never really get in to them 6th grade hit I got into Bowling For Soup, found a rock station on the radio found Fly Leaf, AFI and Stone Temple Pilots, also got me into Evanescance, and Seether went to a Fly Leaf show witch had Nonpoint, Stone Sour, & Disturbed witch brought me Slipknot, Marilyn Manson, and Chimaira then was shown Alice in Chains, Pantera (again), KoRn (again), and Rob Zombie, my unclel then took me to Family Values 07 witch got me into Mudvayne, Trivium, Droid, and ultimately lead me to Machine Head, witch lead me to Mayhem witch got me Suicide Silence, witch git to where I am now.... sorry for the book

When I was 12, my dad gave me Led Zeppelin IV, Bark at the Moon by Ozzy, and Machine Head by Deep Purple. That really moved me away from the white stripes, Andrew bird, and Dave Matthews band, which is what I was first a really big fan of. I then moved into Pink Flyod, GNR, motley crüe, sabbath, iron maiden, etc. My first concert was Ozzfest 2007, so my next gateway bands were stuff like lamb of god, coincidentally my current favorite band. Probably one of the more important gateway bands for, what I'm assuming, a lot of people, would be slipknot. Now, I mostly listen to tech death, progressive death metal, prog metal, melo death, etc.

SOAD, Slipknot, Linkin Park, then I moved on to Lamb of God and stuff like Korn, then I moved on to Thrash, then death metal, then I started to dabble with all sorts of underground music, metal and non metal, now I listen to Jazz, classical, Metal, symponic, Electronic, Hip-Hop, Indie ect.

I'd have to say that alt-metal bands served as my gateways as much as any, bands like Korn, Deftones, Disturbed, SOAD, and Slipknot specifically, and probably Black Sabbath as well, seeing as how they were my favorite band for all of middle school and remain one of my favorites.

The first lyric I learned was the end of the chorus to "The Unforgiven" back when I was in 3rd-5th grade.

Im pretty young so I cant really relate to hearing Sabbath and getting into metal like other people on here haha (even though I do like Sabbath). The first band I remember liking that was metal was Disturbed. It was a huge change up for me because I was raised with classical music and that is what I am currently studying. But both genres have many similarities and I think that is why I like heavy metal so much. There is melody within the music and harmonies that cant be done in other genres. It has no boundaries. It always finds a way to become better in a sense. After listening to disturbed though, I found A7X (Beast and the Harlot more specifically). And it took off from there. I love everything metal now haha

I started out with my mom having me listen to bands like Tool, Metallica and Disturbed on a daily basis. All she listened to was either her own mix cds or the rock station, which then brought me Slipknot and I didn't even find out till almost a year later that Slipknot is what I was listening too. I just feel in love with metal after that. And was constantly trying to find something heavier than the last.
