I just don't get why people don't understand this. I've talked to a lot of people and they complain about how the headliners aren't heavy enough and how bands like Divine Heresy or Whitechapel or Messhugah should be top spot. Now don't get me wrong, their all great bands but they will NEVER headline. The headliners are always going to be the famous mainstream bands like Korn and Slipknot and Marilyn Manson because their the ones who are gonna bring in the crowd and more importantly, the cash so Reese and Lyman can enable you to rest assured that there will be another mayhem fest the next year.

ya i agree. if you look at most headliners for shows like this most of them are bands that are very popular, are under category of metal, and will make who ever is running the show alot of money. so you really cant expect too many festivals to have heavy metal headliners (unless it is a heavy metal festival)

It has nothing to do with the band being mainstream. It only has to do with the tou getting money. If there's a really famous band that's not mainstream at all thy would bring in more money then korn, korn would not headline.

Mastadon did headline Mayhem, the first year. So don't count Mastodon out. Headliners are always going to be the bands to draw in the biggest crowd. Sucks, but its true. Bullet for my Valentine will be picked always before Trivium to headline (i say this cause they're a similar style. Trivium is WWWAAYYY better though.) And A7X will be picked before All That Remains. Even among thrash metal. Metallica and Megadeth will always be picked to headline before Overkill or Annihilator. Wish it wasnt like that, but w/e.
Stuff... Things...
